How short term insurance works.

Short term medical insurance covers the gap between insurance plans. This is beneficial if you are between jobs or have recently graduated college. If you are a new grad and are under your parent’s health insurance plan, your coverage will cease once you are no longer a student. Not having short term insurance between jobs or before you find a one after graduation can be a serious gamble. In the event of an accident or sudden illness not having proper coverage could not only ruin you financially, it could also make it very difficult to obtain insurance once you find employment. Some insurance companies will not insure you if you have had a lapse in coverage.

When you are between jobs, newly graduated, or waiting for your group insurance to kick in, short term insurance will make sure you are covered in the event of illness or injury. Most short term insurance plans work on a deductible. When you choose a plan you pick a deductible. The deductible is the amount of money you pay out-of-pocket for your medical expenses before the short term insurance begins to cover the expenses. Once you meet your deductible, depending on the plan, your insurance company will pay out a percentage of the cost. So, if you have an emergency room visit the insurance company will pay 80% of the cost if you have met your deductible. The lower the deductible, the higher the monthly premium. Short term insurance can be very expensive but not as expensive as not having health insurance. Once you reach the limit of covered expenses, say $4,000, then the plan will cover 100% of the covered expenses to a predetermined maximum. There are eligibility requirements to receive short term medical insurance. You are not eligible for short term insurance if you live in New York, Vermont, Hawaii, Alaska, New Jersey, or Alabama. You cannot receive it if you are not a US citizen or if you are a citizen traveling outside the US. Typically, insurance companies are very picky about who they give short term insurance to. If you have chronic health issues or have a dangerous job then you may not be eligible. See also fee for service.

In general the rules and eligibility requirements set out in a short term insurance plan are very strict. Read over the plan very carefully before purchasing the policy. There are some guidelines for receiving coverage and steps that must be followed prior to seeking treatment in a non-emergency situation. It is suggested by expert in the insurance business that you obtain a minimum of three quotes.
